How to read a Lolita size chart
Compare your body with the finished garment, leave room to move and check the limits of each adjustable detail.
Measurements come before size labels
Your usual clothing size does not transfer reliably to every Lolita brand. Even two pieces marked Medium by one brand can use different bust, waist and length measurements.
Treat the size name as a label. Fit depends on your body measurements, the finished garment dimensions, fabric stretch, adjustable details, the layers worn underneath and how much room you prefer.
01 Measure
Measure your body

02 Compare
Body and garment measurements
Body measurements
The recommended range for the wearer. A listed body bust of 88 to 92 cm means the design is intended for someone within that range.
Garment measurements
The finished size of the clothing. A 96 cm garment bust does not fit a 96 cm body comfortably because movement and inner layers need room.
Double a flat width only when the brand's instructions tell you to do so. Check whether the chart uses body measurements, garment measurements, flat measurements, relaxed size or maximum stretch. If the standard is unclear, ask before ordering.
03 Wearing Ease
Zipping closed is not the same as a good fit

A dress may zip while still restricting breathing, sitting, arm movement or the layers underneath. The extra space between your body and the garment is called wearing ease.
For a fitted, non-stretch bodice, 4 to 8 cm of bust ease is a useful starting point. A JSK worn over a blouse usually needs more. The brand's official recommended range still takes priority.
04 Adjustable Details
Check the limits of each adjustment

Shirring
The lower number is relaxed; the upper number is full stretch. Do not plan to wear elastic at its absolute limit.

Corset lacing
Lacing can refine the silhouette, but it cannot make a garment wider when the zipper will not close.

Adjustable straps
They change bodice height and waist position, not the bust circumference.

Elastic and side tabs
Check the relaxed waist, comfortable stretch range and maximum limit separately.
