LOLITA STYLE GUIDE
Different Types of Skirts: JSK, OP & SK Explained
A visual beginner’s guide to telling Jumperskirts, One-Pieces, and Skirts apart—and choosing the right base for a Lolita coordinate.
A quick way to read Lolita garment names
These three abbreviations do not describe a style. They tell you how the garment is built. Look above the waist: no bodice is an SK; straps make it a JSK; sleeves or a finished top make it an OP.
JSK vs OP vs SK at a glance
| Type | Full name | What you see above the waist | How it is usually styled |
|---|---|---|---|
| JSK | Jumperskirt | Sleeveless bodice with straps or wide shoulder panels | Layer over a blouse, cutsew, knit top, or other separate top |
| OP | One-Piece | A finished bodice with sleeves or its own upper-body construction | Wear as the complete dress; add outerwear or accessories as desired |
| SK | Skirt | No bodice; it begins at the waist | Pair with a blouse, cutsew, knit top, or another suitable upper garment |
What is a JSK in Lolita fashion?
A JSK is the flexible choice. Because the blouse is separate, one dress can change character with a crisp shirt, a soft knit, or a high-neck cutsew. The straps are your cue: this is a dress designed to layer.
What is an OP in Lolita fashion?
An OP already owns the upper half of the silhouette. Its neckline and sleeves are part of the design, so the dress reads as one considered piece from the first glance.
What is an SK in Lolita fashion?
An SK starts at the waist and lets the top do more of the styling work. It is the most modular option: change the blouse, keep the skirt, and the mood shifts with it.
"No bodice means SK. Straps mean JSK. Sleeves or a finished upper body mean OP."

How to choose between JSK, OP and SK
Choose JSK for layering, OP for a complete statement, and SK when you want to build different looks around one skirt. There is no best type—only the one that suits how you like to dress.
Answer to the test
It is a JSK (Jumperskirt). The red garment has a sleeveless bodice and shoulder straps; the white blouse is a separate layer underneath. An OP would include its own finished sleeves or upper body, while an SK would begin at the waist with no bodice.
Can a JSK be worn without a blouse?
Sometimes, depending on the cut, climate, and event—but it is constructed as a layering piece, so a blouse, cutsew, or knit top is the classic coordinate choice.
What is the difference between an OP and a JSK?
An OP already has its own finished upper body and commonly has sleeves, while a JSK is sleeveless and needs a separate layer underneath.
Does SK mean a shorter skirt?
No. SK simply means skirt. Its length, fullness, and style can vary; the key is that it begins at the waist and has no built-in bodice.
Which one is best for a first Lolita coordinate?
Choose based on how much styling flexibility you want: JSK is a versatile layering base, OP is an easy all-in-one dress option, and SK is ideal if you enjoy mixing separate tops and bottoms.
