Measure from the dress, not from a size label

The exact clearance depends on the fabric, trim, and how much the skirt moves, so check the dress from the front, sides, and back.
If the petticoat stops far above the hem, the lower skirt may collapse while the upper part stays full. This creates a shelf or a narrow section that does not match the dress’s line. Try a longer support before adding more volume.
Match length to the skirt you actually own
A knee-length dress usually needs a shorter petticoat than a tea-length dress, but the name of the skirt length is only a starting point. Two dresses described the same way can place the waist differently or finish at different points on the leg. Compare the measurement of the garment in front of you.
Printed borders and scalloped hems make the check more important. The support should lift the skirt without pushing a border into a sharp fold. If the lower print looks compressed or the lace edge turns upward, reduce the volume first and then reassess the length.
Check the petticoat under movement

- If it shows only at the back, check whether the dress rises when you sit or walk. A slip, a different waist position, or a slightly shorter support may solve the problem.
- If the skirt has a shelf above the hem, the support may be too short or too full at the waist. Test a longer shape before tightening the waistband.
- If the dress is pulled tight over the support, reduce volume. A length change cannot fix a skirt that does not have enough fabric to cover the chosen outline.
