To wash a Lolita dress safely, read the sewn-in care label before choosing water, detergent or heat. Remove only the trims that the garment is designed to detach, keep a record of where they belong, and follow each washing, bleaching, drying and ironing symbol. If the label is missing or unclear, pause and ask the retailer or a professional textile cleaner.
Start with the care label, not the fibre name
Cotton, polyester and blended fabrics can appear in dresses with very different prints, linings and trims. Fibre content helps describe the garment, but it does not replace its care instructions. The GINETEX guide to ISO 3758:2023 care symbols says the wash-tub symbol determines whether domestic washing is possible and gives the maximum temperature. Bars below the tub call for a milder cycle.
The live Forest Wardrobe Morning Forest OP is described as pure cotton with a single-layer skirt. Its white option is also described as more sheer than the other colours. None of those details tells you which wash cycle to use. The label inside the dress must answer that question.
If a listing and the sewn-in label disagree, do not choose the more convenient instruction. Save the product page, photograph the label and ask for clarification before cleaning.
Map every detachable and vulnerable detail
Take front, back and close photographs before removing anything. Check bows, waist ties, brooches, chains, collar pieces, underskirts and removable sleeves. Put small parts in a labelled bag so that left and right pieces do not get switched.

Read the whole garment as one care problem

Follow every symbol, not only the wash tub
If the label allows hand washing, GINETEX advises dissolving a fine detergent in plenty of water, moving the textile carefully and avoiding rubbing, pulling or wringing. A crossed wash tub means do not wash. A numbered tub sets a maximum temperature, not a target to exceed.
Then read the remaining symbols. The triangle controls bleaching. The square covers drying, including whether tumble drying is allowed. Iron dots set the maximum sole-plate temperature, and GINETEX notes that this choice should come from the label rather than fibre content. Embroidery, prints and applied decoration may require more caution even when the base fabric looks familiar.
Dry the dress in the shape the label permits
Do not hang a heavy wet dress from narrow straps unless the care instructions permit that method. Do not use a tumble dryer because it seems faster. Natural-drying symbols distinguish line drying from flat drying and can also specify shade. Support the garment evenly, straighten seams without pulling them, and keep detachable pieces together while they dry.
Wait until every layer is dry before storing the dress. Check the lining, shirring and gathered seams, where dampness can remain less visible. Reattach bows and other parts only after both the dress and the trim are dry.
